For the Love of Writing

Woodgrain Eco Sketch Book- Poketo

Today I'm working hard on a screenplay that I recently began.  I'm meeting up with my former screenwriting instructor in a little while to go over some of my ideas and my progress, so I have to buckle down and focus so that I'm prepared.  However, my writing inspired me to share with you some of favorite writing notebooks.  If it's not already obvious how much I love journals, I think this will give you an idea of how much time I spend thinking about them!

Woodgrain Eco Sketch book- Poketo

Poketo is one of my favorite sources for awesome paper products, and most especially, notebooks.  I absolutely love, love love the Woodgrain Eco Sketch book (top two photos).  I've been ogling it for months!  I love that feeling of looking at a blank page and having an open canvas to pour your thoughts on. Plus, that woodgrain cover is so beautiful.

Lines Notebooks from Poketo

Sometimes I do enjoy the idea of compartmentalizing my scatterbrained thoughts, which is why I find myself coveting Poketo's Lines Notebooks. You can still write as the ideas come, but you can harness them a bit by keeping them in different areas on the page.  I also recommend this Multi-Notebook from Rezon. I use it quite a bit on days where I want to tackle to-do lists while I jot down grocery notes, and all the while entertain my creative bursts. With this notebook you can do it all on just one page!

Grid paper is another favorite medium. I think it's really the best when you either need to make precise drawings, or take very organized notes. Back in school I found it so much easier to read my notes and keep them organized when I used grid paper. Poketo's Eco A5 Notebook is a lovely, little, slim grid journal that you can tote anywhere. Currently, I'm using a Dia Grid Notebook that my sister bought me on trip upstate to the Dia Beacon. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a link to it in their bookshop, but basically it's a larger, thicker version of the A5.

A beautiful cover will always steal away my heart. Here are some more favorites in that category. You'll see a lot of Rifle Paper Co because I really admire how wonderfully they use color.  They truly have some of the best stationary and paper products out there and their journals are no exception.  I actually just bought a little bundle of gorgeous ones the other day.  Can't wait to start using them.

Friday Lust: Paper Mojo

I haven't been writing much because my life has been consumed with a number of other things lately.  However, I'm trying to get back on the wagon!  I thought that on this beautiful Friday afternoon, I would celebrate life by looking at gorgeous paper prints from Paper Mojo.  I've been envisioning different projects with these different prints.

Ikat in Purple, Tan and Gold

Would love to cover a jewelry box in this gorgeous Ikat print.  It's so classy and shiny I can hardly resist it.  If I were a talented Origamist I would attempt to make actual jewelry with it!

Chevron Print Lotka Paper- Gold on Black

This I can see this Chevron print in so many places including as a beautiful journal cover.  It's got that irresistible classic glamour.  Makes me want to grab a martini glass and have a vodka gimlet.

Zebra Print Lotka Paper

I'm not one of those girls that loves animal prints on anything, but I would love to cover some aluminum cans with this.  It would instantly turn boring office containers for pens, pencils, paint brushes and the like into hip eye-catchers.

Rossi Tradewind Classics- Peacock Feathers

I'm a sucker for peacock feathers and their rich colors.  However, I'm especially loving this Rossi Tradewind Classic because it breaks out of the typical colors.  I would love to cover some balsa wood sheets with this print, seal them, and presto!  I would have good, sturdy and above all, stylish placemats!

Here are some more lovely prints!

Rossi Tuscan Print Paper- Medieval Stencil

Chiyogami- Painted Daisies on Acqua

Katazome-shi- Tribal Pattern

Pirouetted Marble Paper- Purple, Yellow, Lilac

What are your favorites?!  What would you do?

What's the Haps!: NYC Summer Streets

View of NYC Summer Streets 2011

Forget the Hamptons! Starting this weekend, you don't need to get out of the city for a fix of outdoor excitement. New York Summer Streets is back! For the next three Saturdays in August (4, 11, 18), New York pedestrians and cyclists will have Park Avenue from Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge to themselves.

Between 7am-1pm, there will be tons of free activities up and down the avenue from free bike rides and helmets to a zip line and rock climbing wall, even Salsa and Bhangra dancing. If sitting back and relaxing is more your speed, well there will be massages too! See the extensive list of free activities here.

There are so many great events across the city in the summer that I've always missed this one, but this year I refuse to miss the zip line. Can't wait to get out there and join my city neighbors on the street!

*Photos are all from the Summer Streets Facebook page.

Veritably Loving Verameat

Ibsens Buck ring by Verameat

To be perfectly honest, I have never been much of a ring person. Partly, it's that I have very sensitive hands and they get easily inflamed and agitated by jewelry and other abrasive materials. Usually, I'm not too bothered by this fact. Although I would certainly prefer to have the model hands of the woman below, I long ago made peace with my irritable digits. This past weekend, however, while wandering the streets of Williamsburg, I started wondering if I shouldn't be fighting the good fight after all- trying to repair my hands enough to decorate them. Having found my way into the beautiful new world of Verameat metalwork I became transfixed with her shiny pieces. Maybe there's a ring person in me after all...

Verameat is a line of jewelry created by Vera Balyura, an artist based in the East Village.  Evidently she's had a shop there for some time, but last weekend she opened a new Brooklyn shop in the Williamsburg Mini Mall on N. 5th Street, right next to the lovely Brooklyn Fox lingerie shop- a dangerous combination for the wallet! (Incidentally, Brooklyn Fox recently opened a sister shop as well. It's around the corner on Bedford and is focused on Women's clothing and accessories. But more on that another time.)

Skeleton Thumbs Up Ring by Verameat

Verameat uses fine materials like real ecologically sound recycled silver and 16k gold in her collections- a plus for sensitive skin-folk like me. Stylistically, her pieces range from whimsical things to hang around your ears and neck to fun ornaments for your wrists and fingers. Some pieces are light and airy like the Ibsens Buck ring up top, but many have a tough-chick sense of humor such as her Skeleton Thumbs Up Ring- one of my personal favorites! If the latter is more your sensibility, then you'll love some of these categories on her website: Vampire, Manly, Monster and Spine. Of course, if you prefer a daintier aesthetic like that of this sweet Lucky Lift Ring, never fear. There's plenty of that to go around too.

Lucky Lift Ring- Verameat

There were loads of necklaces hanging in cool little clusters all around the shop- kinda made me feel like was in my own incredibly-stocked jewelry closet or something. I wish! But as much as I found those intriguing and not horribly expensive (they cost as low as $50 depending on the size and material), I found that it was the rings that were really screaming my name. I tried on this Leaf Wrap Ring probably three different times wondering if this was the piece that would shuttle me into ringdom. Alas, though it was an affordable $40 I ultimately decided that I shouldn't impulse purchase. I just moved into a new apartment after all! I figured if I was still thinking about it later in the week, then perhaps it should be mine. The thing is... I'm still thinking about it...

Leaf Wrap Ring- Verameat

Sucked into the Verameat Ring vortex, I kept gravitating to the simpler, botanic/nature-inspired pieces. I saw this Feather Ring below in gold and also tried it several times wondering if it suited me better than the Leaf Wrap Ring. Of course, trying to choose between gorgeous and gorgeous was utterly impossible, especially since the Feather Ring was equally priced at $40. I suppose the upside is that the rings are affordable enough that I could always get two quality rings for the price of what one would cost most everywhere else. How is that for a rationalization?

Rose Studs- Verameat

If you find yourself in Williamsburg this weekend definitely steer yourself into Verameat. The way I see it, once in awhile it's nice to treat yourself after a long week of work, and the perfect, shiny little something-something might just be sitting in her showroom waiting for you. Maybe even for me!

Happy Birthday Mick Jagger!

Since it's Mick Jagger's birthday, I thought it would be appropriate to post a little round up of awesome Mick-inspired design. After all, if there's anyone who is an expert at making a splash it's the Stones' outsized frontman. Check out all the ways you can take home even a little smidgen of the Mick Jagger renegade aesthetic.

Love this skull mug Mick is holding.  Now that's a goblet.  Take a cue from Mick and check out these cranial designs.  I'm love Social Anarchy Designs' Skull and Bones studs (currently on sale at Fab.com!), and I can totally see the Porcelain Skulls' Beaver Skull next to a cool terrarium or on my mantle.

Mick Jagger's 1967 mugshot from the raid on Keith Richard's apartment.

Celebrity mugshots always have a seductive quality in our tabloid culture and Mick sat for his share like a proper bad boy. You can take home Sarah Chiarot's version (below), or you can dress your coffee table in the real thing and then some with Busted: Mug Shot and Arrest Records of the Famous and Infamous.

Mick Jagger, 1966

Let's face it. Mick is nothing if not loud, flashy, fearless, and invariably stylish.  Check out this photo spread in Italian Vogue documenting his rock and roll panache.  If you're lacking a bit of flare in your life, never fear. I'm quite sure Mick would approve of this incredible wallpaper by Flat Vernacular which is currently on sale at Fab.com.  I feel confident, however, that he would feel the need to push the envelope and pair it with these pillows made from vintage fabric by Yuko Trading, and throw down this Rugsville Overdyed Turquoise Rug.  Topped off with a massive gilded mirror flanked by some over the top rococo sconces from eBay and I'm pretty sure Mick would give this look his stamp of rock and roll approval! Of course, incorporating just one of these design elements at a time would probably make any home pretty rad too.  ;)
